After an unsuccessful attempt to satisfy the demand for “automatic machines” with the help of the AMT robotic box, AvtoVAZ decided to correct the situation and now Vesta is offered with a CVT …. Looking ahead, I’ll say that people who were waiting for changes will be satisfied, though most likely not completely. However, first things first

It would be possible to start a conversation about a car with its appearance, but there’s nothing to say here, by and large, for all the words were spoken back in 2015, when the car just appeared on our market, and supplemented in 2017, at the moment release wagon version. What am I leading to? And besides, the car has not changed externally since its release. However, he doesn’t need it – a Togliatti wizard of British descent (read – Steve Mattin) did a good job and drew, no doubt, a memorable and bright silhouette. Supporters and opponents of the X-style are still waging their Cold War. However, some new touches nevertheless appeared, for example, glossy black lining on the racks, a small spoiler on the trunk lid, new wheels …. In fact, now I have listed only a small set of external differences of the new Exclusive version, which is available only for a sedan and a regular station wagon. Yes, the flagship SW Cross is devoid of all this splendor, as well as the black Alcantara ceiling trim, additional interior lighting and combined armchair trim. However, I will not call it any definitive loss, well, perhaps, the black ceiling really makes the car a little richer. And all these touches, in my opinion, are not too important – we are waiting for a real restyling, which, according to rumors, should already happen next year.

What can not be belittled, for example, is the spaciousness of the passenger compartment, due to which Vesta can calmly swipe at cars a class higher (in generalists, you can generally go to bed at full height). Unfortunately, the armchairs cause some questions – I won’t say that they are not comfortable, but the seat cushion was a bit short for me, a tall man. Here I recall Vesta Sport, where there are already other seats – with a longer pillow. Why not put them on an ordinary Vesta? The question is open. In continuation of upgrading the car class, I note that the car is equipped with options to the eyeballs – I will not list everything, but in the maximum configuration we also have heated seats, including the back row, and heated steering wheel, and a camera, and an electric drive for folding mirrors. By the way, an amusing situation is connected with it – AvtoVAZ calls this option exclusive in its class, which is a little cunning – remember Skoda and Volkswagen. Now I want to warn you about a moment of hatred, because we are moving to the weak point of Vesta – to the multimedia system. Do not get me wrong, there are no complaints about the sound, the quality of the picture from the rear view camera, either, but the device itself is a real disability in the world of “multimedia” – its sensor is slow and the interface is somewhat dumb. Want to connect your phone? Forget – this is that dance with a tambourine …. You can get rid of half of the problems at once by installing a third-party “mafon with aliexpress,” but not every owner will bother so much. However, with the previously mentioned restyling, the multimedia system should also be replaced ….

Now it’s time to talk about the most important thing – about technology. Here the situation also develops in an interesting way. Firstly, now it’s worth completely forgetting about the robot – it only has a place in the Grant family. Secondly, the variator is combined with only one engine – Nissan 1.6 with the familiar HR16 index. The variator also has an index familiar to many – Jatco JF015E. However, we will talk about this a little later. I will only add that this bunch of motor and gearbox was installed on a huge number of other cars. I will name only a couple of them: Renault Logan, Renault Kaptur, Nissan Juke. I foresee the question of why the variator, for example, with a 1.8 engine, was not made friends at AvtoVAZ. The answer is it is economically disadvantageous and technically difficult. So for now, we are satisfied with Japanese units ….

Meanwhile, they are very good, in any case, their use will give the owners of the new West one very important parameter – comfort. Yes, sitting behind the wheel of Vesta with a CVT, you will gain it – the difference is so great with AMT. Thoughtful switching, tugging, traction dips – all this is in the past. Now we have a smooth start from the spot and soft switching of virtual gears, in other words, imitation without annoying delays. By the way, the vibrations have disappeared – here, however, the engine mounts that have been redesigned still matter. Praise and brakes – now they are completely disc. In general, traveling in the city and jostling in traffic jams is a pleasure, but pain begins on the track. You see, by changing the robot to a CVT, AvtoVAZ did not add an important thing to the car – dynamics. No, the paper demonstrates an improvement in acceleration by almost a second, but in reality it is still sluggish. Subjectively, the car even accelerates more slowly than the passport data – they tell us 11.3 seconds to hundreds, but in fact it seems that the car takes a run in at least 12 seconds, like some Priora or the classic Eight. By the way, the SW Cross version, unfortunately, looks generally a complete outsider, because it rides even slower, and at the same time is inferior in handling to an ordinary station wagon and sedan. In fairness, we add that it is heavier, and has a higher center of gravity. To sum up, I’ll say that overtaking must be planned ahead of time, and when you do go out on them, then, as my colleague put it, you understand that it’s kind of like “slippers on the floor,” like, and the sound of the crankshaft spun is obvious, but it clearly exceeds road acceleration. But fuel consumption will definitely please everyone – on average you will see a figure of eight liters when driving in a mixed cycle. In addition, the engine is adapted for ninety-second gasoline, which is also a plus.

So what is the result? The introduction of the variator positively influenced the perception of the car as a whole, because this unit immediately solved the lion’s share of the problems of comfort of movement. As for the dynamics, there is still no need to especially blame the car here. Yes, the car is categorically not enough on the dynamics of the car, but the same can be said about competitors, in any case those who are equipped with similar units, but in the city, for example, Vesta moves very nicely. By the way, it was not by chance that I indicated the variator index – knowledgeable people will recall that at one time it thundered with its unreliability, but since then so much water has flowed, and AvtoVAZ itself has announced successful tests and the total mileage of the tested cars in a million kilometers. So the unit should depart its warranty period of 120 thousand. The only question is what will happen next when these cars rush to the secondary market, because there are not so many workshops that, in principle, take up the maintenance and repair of this unit. By the way, the manufacturer claims that the working fluid in the variator will not have to be changed: it is designed for the entire service life (for eight years or 120,000 km). At the same time, servicemen will tell you something else that timely fluid replacement is the key to the long life of the variator.

However, we were distracted, because in many ways Vesta remained the Vesta that we know. She has a spacious interior, good handling, generous equipment for her money and excellent suspension, which is not afraid of Russian roads. In addition, it still remains the most advantageous offer on the market. It is a pity that, with each refinement, the cost advantage is rapidly declining ….
