We staged the French crossover a rigorous check on the roads of various qualities, including off-road
Now it’s hard to believe, but until 2008, the Renault model line did not have a single crossover. And the first of the SUV family was Koleos, created based on the Egeus concept, introduced in 2006. The first generation model was produced for eight years and survived even two restyling. The second generation crossover staked out the flagship’s place in the Russian model range.
To understand how prestigious a car is, often enough to look … at its key. For example, if Renault Duster and Kaptur the key card looks quite ordinary, then at Koleos it is lined with expensive glossy plastic in ivory. It looks very stylish, and it’s even a pity that you do not need to get it out of your pocket to unlock the machine, as it provides keyless access and engine start.
However, you can get a card only in advance to remotely start the power unit using the Renault Start system. In my case, it’s a 2.5 liter petrol aspirated engine with 171 hp. In addition to this engine, Koleos in Russia is equipped with a 2-liter gasoline engine with 144 hp. and a 2 liter turbodiesel developing 177 hp All modifications are four-wheel drive, all combined with a stepless variator.
In addition to keyless entry and remote engine start, Renault Koleos offers other attractive features. I note, for example, such as voice recognition and hands-free mode, an intelligent automatic parking system (parallel, perpendicular and even angular!), Cup holders with heating and cooling, heated front and rear seats, steering wheel and windshield, ventilation of the front seats , dual-zone climate system and the function of opening the tailgate with the help of foot movement under the bumper.
Perfectly equipped with a crossover and for safety. He monitors the lane of movement, controls the blind spots, and also knows how to automatically switch from high beams to low if he has an oncoming or passing car in his field of vision. The new-generation ESP stability control system will help maintain control of the crossover even in the most difficult situations. And, of course, one cannot fail to mention the 5-star Euro NCAP crash test rating.
In different roles
Before setting off on the road, once again I note the correct landing geometry at the wheel. The range of seat and steering wheel adjustments is sufficient for both Gulliver and the midget. A chair with a variable density filler perfectly distributes the load. The vertical 8.7-inch touch screen with high-quality graphics has an intuitive menu and can be divided into two parts, for example, to simultaneously see the navigation and the list of radio stations. About Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, as well as USB-connectors and sockets, I think, and do not need to talk – all this is available with a margin. Passengers will like it here. So, the second row differs from its competitors in a comfortable sofa and legroom that is record-breaking in the class.
In the city, the crossover feels like a fish in water. Due to the large area of glazing, thin pillars and large mirrors visibility is excellent. Together with a wonderful sense of size, this allows you to confidently squeeze through the narrow lanes made by cars. The atmospheric gasoline engine pulls powerfully throughout the rev range, and the continuously variable variator provides instant reaction to the fuel supply.
On the Koleos motorway, the roadway is ironed, paying little attention to bumps and ruts. A clear zero position at the steering wheel causes a feeling of driving on rails, while the power unit does not experience a lack of power even at a speed of “a hundred”. But the winding highway likes the crossover even more. A dense suspension provides minimal roll, and a very precise steering wheel with excellent feedback allows you to draw a trajectory with an accuracy of almost a millimeter. Safe understeer manifests itself only at the limit of tire grip. It is significant that even large irregularities, if they happen to get under the wheels in a bend, do not knock Koleos off the trajectory.
I leave the asphalt. After prolonged rains, the primer turned into mud slurry, and my tires are not off-road at all. Will they be able to rake? Will the clutch overheat? And how will the CVT behave, which, as you know, does not like such adventures? No, no and NO! I was afraid in vain. The crossover confidently moves forward, and even moves off easily after I specifically stop in the most inappropriate places for this. Of course, you should not climb into the jungle on it, but, in which case, the “Frenchman” will not fail.
So, does Renault Koleos justify the title of flagship of the lineup? Definitely yes. Moreover, for this, half of the above abilities would be enough for him. And here also the price is extremely attractive. So, a 2-liter gasoline version can be purchased for 1,699,000 rubles, the most expensive turbodiesel version is priced at 2,337,900 rubles, and the option we tested is priced at 2,177,900.
