It’s time to start the description of acquaintance with the new Volvo S60 and V60 Cross Country, and I look at the websites of branded women’s clothing and bags … Because I want to start with a conversation about design and find a match
And I find. Qualified consultants take me to the models The Bridge, Birkin from Hermes, Ralph Lauren, Max Mara. As you can see, there is nothing northern, but it is believed that the Swedes are specialists in technology, and as for design, contact the Italians. However, minimal Scandinavian design is also design.
We talked about him during the spring test of the flagship sedan Volvo – S90. Now, the S60 interiors with the V60 Cross Country are made in the same design style (which they all got from the large XC90 crossover). Monotonous? Rather noble. For some reason, it used to seem to me that the “younger” models should not be too frankly copying the “older” ones. Customers might have the feeling that there is no point in overpaying. In fact, it does not arise. The “older” and “younger”, one way or another, remain different, and those who are aiming for the S90 are unlikely to think about the S60. On the other hand, if the S60 buyer loses, then a little. And in some ways he will win.
So, outwardly, the new S60 is just a slightly reduced copy of the S90. Compared with the second generation, even after restyling, the third S60 has become much more solid, “more muscular”. What does not fit very well with its positioning: the sedan is considered sports. In fact, according to driving sensations, the way it is, but in appearance it cannot be said. Just think – now, another business representative came to important negotiations.
But if you take a look inside you will understand that you can come to negotiations on the S60, but both partners, the one who is driving and the one who turns out to be a passenger, are unlikely to want to conduct them on the go. Because the driver will not be able to deny himself the pleasure of experiencing and demonstrating the capabilities of a sports sedan, the passenger will certainly not respond positively to this.
It emphasizes sports seats, covering the body with a pleasant hug. You can install the driver’s seat near the floor and sit in it, folding, like in a truly sports model. From the review, leave only a huge hood. The convenience of the chair is added by a pop-up popliteal cushion, just like the other settings, electrified. It is believed that it is comfortable to sit in this chair, but not to sleep. I tried to stop for a rest – and, leaning back, fell asleep instantly. That is, and it is convenient. And I’ll add, if the body requires rest, it’s better for the driver not to take risks, but to stop and obey. Even the gambling on the dynamic Volvo S60 will not save you from fatigue.
The car, by the way, will itself remind you of the rest. It is enough to shake the wheel from side to side, and it will recognize your fatigue in this maneuver and highlight a cup of coffee on the “tidy”. And this is not the whole concierge service available here. For example, you can set the steering wheel and each of the front seats to automatically turn on when starting the engine, plus choose the intensity of heating. Well, or ventilation, when it comes to summer.
All climate settings are made through the central screen – “tablet”. Volvo minimized the number of “physical” buttons, mainly they are responsible for managing the “music”. Almost everything else is “wired” into the multimedia system, and sometimes it’s not easy to deal with it. But, the truth is, the instruction manual is “wired” here too, so you won’t have to scroll through the manual.
I try not to open the Guide, I try to understand the logic of Volvo. She is. A separate “page” of multimedia is devoted to security systems, their icons occupy a whole page. Here you can see the control of the “blind” zones, and tracking the marking lines with taxiing into the lane, and automatic braking in front of obstacles, and much more … I include everything. To make sure that everything not only works, but is also tuned even a little better than the test S90. It seemed or not? But the automatic braking system on the S60, although it far more than once displayed a warning symbol on the projection screen (and it is here!), But it never hit the brakes, independently and unexpectedly. And the wagon V60 Cross Country, which I moved to a week later, “sinned” in this regard only once.
S60 “related” S90 not only in terms of external and internal design. Both models are built on the new SPA platform. They have a double wishbone in front and a multi-link in the rear with a transverse composite spring. But a diesel engine is offered for the S90, and only a pair of gasoline, two-liter, turbocharged ones for the S60. This is a 190-horsepower unit for the T4 version with front-wheel drive and 249-horsepower for the T5 version with all-wheel drive. It is implemented here with the “participation” of the 5th generation BorgWarner multi-plate clutch.
“But who has been here for a long time, they know that all instructions lie …” Not really, but there is some truth to this. So, taxiing into a strip, which could be very useful at low speeds, is intensified only at high speeds. And how much! I have already met a similar one on the test Kia, where I wanted to disable a zealous system. Here, too. In the end, on the far night road there is absolutely no control of other cars either, you are driving in your lane or, like the “pilots”, you are missing axial markings between the wheels. But a sharp push to the side when the thruster is operating can be unexpected to danger. Moreover, if the road is not too rough during the transition period from autumn to winter.
So what do we have with the expense?
Another surprise was the sudden loss of pressure with all four (!!) wheels. In fact, they most likely were slightly underserved at the service, and with frost the pressure drop became more pronounced. Interestingly, at high speed it also did not increase. In the roadside workshop, the tires were pumped up to normal, I carried out the procedure for updating the readings in the system, but for some reason the warning seemed to freeze … And then another one appeared, distracted by the road, I blinked it, and the computer said that it had been memorized. Did you get a message on the phone? Checked – no, all SMS are read. Then what is it? After pressing four or five virtual buttons, it became clear: in the washer reservoir, the liquid level is low. Pleasant caring for the driver, but … how long it took to get to the message, which could be replaced with just a small icon on the dashboard.
I re-read what was written and thought: I’m finding fault… In fact, these are such trifles of life in comparison with the general feeling of a car. From a genuine premium, nobly decorated and equally nobly moving in space. Swedish minimalism in design is the case when the beauty of a thing is determined not by the abundance of ruffles and strassiks, but by their absence. When the shape of the bag without the extra “sparkles” speaks of the brand, while clothes and cosmetics do not “cross over” the natural beauty of the model, they only emphasize it. In my opinion, the competitors of the S60 are too technocratic in terms of interior design. And in the Swedish car everything is normal – and expensive materials, and sophisticated appliances.
“Tidy” – yes, painted. But this is done very carefully and more interesting than in the previous generation S60. There is also a function similar to Audi showing a map of the area between the scales of the main devices. But here’s a technical funny thing: for a long time I could not figure out how to reset fuel consumption. I decided that this could not be done, and calmed down, observing that the average figure – about 11 liters per hundred – almost does not change either after a high-speed “interception” along the highway or in the urban crowd. However, it changes, and you can set the zeroing of the consumption indicator after each trip. But only on the screen of the multimedia system – display a graph with a “step” of 1, 10 or 100 km. And here are the indicators: with a “cruise” at around 110 km / h, the 249-horsepower turbo engine is content with just eight liters, but generally consumes no more than a dozen on a long trip. Things are worse in the city and – in the case of the V60 Cross Country with the same engine – on rough terrain. Here, the flow rate can reach 13, and even 15 liters. And the average figure, the one on the dashboard, has not changed.
And the “tidy” in the sedan and wagon were different. S60 showed two familiar scales, and V60 Cross Country – only one. The tachometer had to be called, choosing the driving modes Individual, Dynamic or Off-Road. Well, it would seem that this is so? Why does the layman, especially the phlegmatic Volvo driver, need a tachometer? What is valuable in it?
It should be said that the new S60 and V60 Cross Country are no longer for Volvo drivers. Not for those who, having powerful motors, move on the roads, professing the principle of “I can, but I do not want to.” On these machines you don’t want to, but you can. You can not want to. They willingly take it off the ground and invite it on a real flight – in a figurative, of course, sense. He plunged inside, slammed the heavy door, merged with the car and … It remains only to monitor compliance with official speed limits, which are easier to jump. “Armed” with a downsizing two-liter 249-horsepower turbo engine, both the sedan and the station wagon accelerate to the first hundred in 6.5 and 6.8 s, respectively! This is all-wheel drive, that is, with extra weight! And overtaking dynamics, that is, acceleration from 80 to 120 km / h takes 5 seconds, if not less!
Yes, here you have a massive business body, which, it would seem, is also not too aerodynamic (but only by sight, it has a coefficient of 0.27). I can’t complain about the general noise inside (in my opinion, only Nokian studded tires “voted”), but, strange thing, I physically felt the weight of the body – and I liked it. Firstly, the sense of security was reinforced. Opening and closing the doors, I drew attention to the thickness of the window frames, as well as the width of the thresholds. Secondly, there was a distinct sense of rigidity, reinforced by the size of the tunnel protruding at the feet of the rear passengers. Its height is 20 cm. And, most importantly, the weight of the body pressed the car to the road, giving a pleasant feeling of a low center of gravity. Like those cars whose controllability is recognized as a reference.
The smoothness of the sedan is magnificent. It simply spreads along the road and skillfully levels out irregularities, even those that can meet you on primers! Just treat them with reverence, because the ride height of the sedan is only 142 mm. It is a sin to complain about the excessive rigidity of the car, it is moderate even when installing 19-inch wheels and tires with a 40 percent profile.
Volvo sports models are a bit short of these standards. If all-wheel drive clearly demonstrates its advantages even on asphalt (front-wheel drive, and even more so, a rear-wheel drive car in conditions of almost bare ice on the track would have long been demolished), my “experimental” sedan and station wagon did not even blink a warning signal of the stabilization system. At some point, it even seemed to me that in a smooth bend I drive the station wagon a little “fan”. I looked at the steering wheel – no, it was turned inward, and not vice versa, so … Nevertheless, the excitement is present, and you really feel that you are piloting, and not just impressively rolling into business negotiations.
All this is all the more surprising that the representatives of the Swedish-Chinese concern are now going to a factory in the USA!
Really among the citizens who gave birth to the term “Volvo-driver”, there are many adherents of this drive, European? Such changes in mentality are cleaner than climatic ones.
But why is Volvo still lacking to break into the list of handling standards? According to my feelings – the steering wheel. Fellow journalists from other publications, on the contrary, praise the S60 taxiing, but it seemed to me a little bit, but late. I tried reconfiguring the steering wheel in Individual mode, but actually switched it to Dynamic mode and did not feel any significant improvement. Small – it was. The highest bar among such cars, in my opinion, is demonstrated by one of the versions of the Porsche Panamera, on which a rare, optional steering gear is installed with minimal gain and mathematical accuracy. But this bar, let’s say, is prohibitive. Therefore, in this case, I do not compare Volvo and at the same time admit: without knowing about such a steering wheel on the Panamera, I would still wish the Swedish mechanism a little more. Or a little better.
And so, of course, the S60 and V60 Cross Country worked out technically to great depths. Take a look at the intricacies of the elements of the rear suspension of the sedan. Yes, for the abundance of its parts and the presence of all-wheel drive you can not immediately see. Rather, you will see an unusual transverse spring (!!). And what is the transverse slope of the front struts, as can be seen from their cups under the hood. A powerful aluminum spacer between the cups … And the battery, which is not in the engine compartment, is probably installed in the trunk area for a more correct weight distribution. In general, everything is aimed at real drive and turns the concept of “Volvo driver” upside down. Or vice versa.
The V60 Cross Country station wagon adds the fifth – Off Road to the four driving modes available on the sedan (Eco, Comfort, Individual and Dynamic). Do not be surprised if you often see it not activated: you can turn it on only at speeds up to 30 km / h, and at 40 km / h it automatically turns off. So it is applicable only in super-heavy traffic conditions, overcoming of which, in principle, is safe: the wagon’s ground clearance according to the passport is as much as 210 mm. My measurements showed that under the front bumper and under the muffler, the clearance is approximately 230 mm.
Being completely delighted with the test of the sedan, I moved to the station wagon – and soon I asked myself a very unusual question: why did they create this car? No, for me, practical five-doors with roof rails have always been, since the first, still childhood acquaintance with cars, symbols of Volvo (and also Volkswagen). What happened, what changed? And why does the V90 Cross Country version seem to be a more logical development of the S90 executive sedan?
And here it is impossible to do without a “live” test. And the sophisticated driver will immediately catch the difference, or rather, … the resemblance. The station wagon of the 60th series absolutely, in my opinion, does not need the same controllability as a sedan, it would be calmly powerful, like those Volvo models of this type that I had met before. What is the current “fire” for him, is simply not clear. Probably, only so that the station wagon of the same size class would correspond to the economic class of the sedan, its social status. Therefore, here everything is the same design and the same “filling”, with the exception of individual components. For example, another “tidy” with an optional tachometer. The audio system is not marked by the Bowers & Wilkins brand (but it sounds great). No CD drive. And there is no climate control display for rear passengers.
But there is much more. An interesting luggage compartment shutter, which can be installed at an angle for easy loading. A partition extends from the raised floor of the trunk, which can serve as a limiter for the bags and at the same time a hanger with hooks for them. The fifth door, equipped with an electric drive, opens with a wave of a foot under the rear bumper, and the sensor is so sensitive that you can open the door by directing a stream from a domestic car wash into this place.
Another feature of the tailgate is its aerodynamics. After a long trip along the highway in autumn weather, I was convinced that the “eye” of the rear view camera, located above the license plate, was completely dirty, and one gray fog was visible on the central display. But the “interception” on a snowy highway gave a completely different result. The door turned white from top to bottom with snow, while the “eye” of the rear camera remained clean! There are only four of them, and the all-round view function works fine.
This test fragment was also confirmed by the fact that the “60s” Volvo are more concerned about the safety of their riders with the help of mechanics, rather than electronics. Yes, as in the case of the S60 on slippery asphalt, the V60 Cross Country wagon rushed through the snow, sometimes rolled to ice, without resorting to a stabilization system. It was important only to switch to manual mode and instead of the automatically selected eighth step, stop at the fifth or fourth, and in turns to go down to the third. At the sixth, the draft on the “moorings” is not the same. A short observation on the go: when choosing fifth gear and a speed of 100 km / h, the engine worked at about 3000 rpm. Not so much.
Magnificent sensations left the brakes of the models. On the sedan, I had to brake to the floor in the dark, when the car, neither with headlights nor with the radar, recognized ahead an slowly creeping old “Niva” with one barely noticeable marker light. And on the station wagon, I checked the effectiveness of the brakes on a snowy road at 120 km / h. ABS worked flawlessly. By the way, there is a recovery of braking energy.
But with all the capabilities of the new sedan and station wagon, I still warn you, as a driver, from showing them to your business partner and your home. This will certainly not be the second thing for fun, and it’s scary (although for you it’s nothing, everything is within the normal range, I still can’t do it), and with the first you spoil the important business relationship. If you need to talk about business on a trip, it is better to rent a more expensive model, preferably with a driver. And you need the sportiness of the S60 sedan alone. For a real, now genuine Volvo drive, the Volvo S60 is slightly more expensive than its main competitors. The price of 249-strong versions starts at 2,770,000 rubles. However, there is evidence that in our market there will be a 190-horsepower grade Momentum at a price of about 2,400,000 rubles. Wagon V60 Cross Country is even more expensive – from 3 069 000 rubles. It is noteworthy that the price difference between the S60 and S90 models is extremely small. However, in terms of driving experience, I would vote for the 60th model, and only in terms of prestige and business – for the 90th.
