Volkswagen has filed an application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office for the registration of the e-Beetle trademark, which alludes to the return of the legendary Beetle with an electric power plant
Volkswagen said goodbye to the Beetle a year ago: the last example of a hatchback with an 80-year history was assembled at a plant in Mexican Puebla. Then the head of the company, Herbert Diss, said that the Beetle was removed from the assembly line forever. However, two years earlier, he also announced that in the future, the hatchback could enter a new era of electrification and “move” to the modular MEB architecture, developed for “green” cars. The electric Beetle will not be the first classic Volkswagen model resurrected in a new status. It is known that by 2022 the company will release the ID.7 electric monocab with an appearance in the spirit of the classic 1950 Microbus.
The production of e-Beetle may be engaged in the Volkswagen Group Components branch specializing in batteries. Last year, its specialists presented a copy of the electric Beetle, assembled jointly with eClassics. The electric car was equipped with a power plant from a citycar e-up! with 82 horsepower and a 36.8 kilowatt-hour battery. The power reserve of such a hatchback was 200 kilometers.
