In Ukraine, there are quite a lot of drivers who allow themselves to drive a car while intoxicated. Through their fault, hundreds of accidents occur that take the lives of dozens of citizens. That is why the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine initiated an increase in responsibility for such motorists and registered on the Verkhovna Rada website bill No. 2695.
This draft law provides for increased liability for those drivers who have committed a fatal accident while intoxicated. The document stipulates an increase in fines for drunk driving, the introduction of a penalty for leaving the scene of an accident, as well as the introduction of new rules that will not allow violators to avoid punishment.
According to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Asen Avakov, the bill must be adopted as urgently as possible, since the number of severe accidents that occur due to the fault of drunk drivers is constantly growing. Moreover, the punishment for such drivers, provided for by current legislation, is very light. To speed up the process of adoption of this bill, the head of the Verkhovna Rada Dmitry Razumkov decided to hold an extraordinary meeting of the parliament.
“An accident on the Capital Highway near Kiev is the last terrible example of the negligence and irresponsibility of some drivers. Two adults and two children died. Our doctors are fighting for the life of another boy. And this is not the first accident provoked by this driver. This bill is extremely important. The legislative responsibility for such cases is a guarantee that the state stands to protect the security of every family and every Ukrainian, ”said Vladimir Zelensky.
