Toyota has confirmed that it is working on a compact crossover that will be built on the basis of a new generation of Yaris hatchback. The model will debut this year.
Matt Harrison, vice president of Toyota’s European division, said that the new product will not just be Yaris with increased ground clearance, but a fundamentally new model with its own unique design. The off-road vehicle will be based on the same GA-B platform, which today is the most compact version of the global TNGA architecture.
Judging by the published teaser, the novelty will really turn out to be larger than the donor Yaris. However, in the company’s lineup, the crossover will take a position below the CH-R in both size and cost. Toyota expects that by 2025, this model will account for 30 percent of all European brand sales.
Toyota management promises not to delay the presentation and assures that fans of the brand will not have to wait long. They plan to launch the production of a new crossover in France on the same assembly line with the new generation Yaris.
The name of the crossover has not been disclosed. According to Toyota, a final decision on this issue has not yet been made. Closer to the start date of sales, it is planned to announce the launch dates and the cost of new items.
