Toyota has fully declassified the “charged” hatchback GR Yaris, a homologation model for the FIA WRC. Trehdverka received a 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbo engine and a new all-wheel drive transmission.

Like the regular Yaris, the new hot hatch is built on the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform, but technically there is little in common between them. The development of GR Yaris was carried out by the Toyota Gazoo Racing motorsport division and the company Tommi Mäkinen Racing, owned by the famous Finnish racing driver.

In order to reduce the weight of the hood, the tailgate and door panels GR Yaris made of aluminum, and the roof is made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer. The rigidity of the body was strengthened due to the rejection of the rear doors – the usual Yaris is offered only in the five-door version. We completely revised the geometry of the front and rear suspension, simultaneously replacing the rear beam with a “double lever”.

In addition, the tiny hatchback was equipped with a sports all-wheel drive GR-FOUR with a multi-plate clutch in the rear axle, two Torsen differentials with a mechanical lock (option) and three operating modes.

By default, the clutch, always working with preload, distributes the torque in a proportion of 60:40. In Sport mode, up to 70 percent of the torque already enters the rear axle. The Track add-in implies that the electronics simulates a permanent four-wheel drive and distributes traction equally between the axles.

Under the hood of the Toyota GR Yaris is a three-cylinder G16E-GTS turbo engine with direct fuel injection and a volume of 1.6 liters. It gives out 272 horsepower (370 Nm) and is combined with a six-speed “mechanics” iMT, coordinating revolutions when switching.

The dynamic characteristics of the “hot” hatchback Toyota has not yet reported. The previous Yaris GRMN with a 212-horsepower 1.8 compressor engine accelerated to a hundred in 6.3 seconds.

In Japan, they have already begun collecting pre-orders for special versions of the RZ “First Edition” and RZ “High-performance First Edition” models, which differ in a set of equipment. The first option will cost 3.96 million yen (2.2 million rubles), the second – 4.56 million yen (2.55 million rubles).
