The Volkswagen brand introduced the current eighth-generation Passat in 2014. The model for the European market survived re-styling at the beginning of this year, however, such machines have not yet reached Russia. Today, the local VW unit announced a “novelty” for the Russian Federation, saying that dealers will have the first cars in the spring of 2020. A more accurate start date for sales is not yet called.
There are few external changes in the “refreshed” version: the car received new bumpers, the horizontal bars of the radiator grille also look different, and the fog lamps appeared to have a bevel from the bottom. The initial version is equipped with LED head optics, and for an extra charge the models will offer matrix headlights with the function of adaptive high beam control.
In the cabin, the digital tidy screen has changed, a new multimedia system with a 9.2-inch display, navigation and gesture control function has appeared. In addition, Volkswagen equipped Passat with an electronic complex IQ.Drive – it provides a “partially autonomous ride” when driving at speeds up to 210 km / h (previously the limit was at around 60 km / h).
In the Russian Passat engine range, there are only two engines and both are gasoline. The base will be the 150-strong TSI turbo engine with a volume of 1.4 liters. The second version is a two-liter supercharged TSI with a return of 190 hp. Both are paired with a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission, the initial engine is also aggregated with a six-speed “mechanics”.
In Europe, the model is also available with the new TDI Evo 150 liter two-liter turbodiesel. The range also includes diesel engines from the pre-reform version – 2.0 TDI with a return of 190 and 240 hp. As a “junior” is offered a 120-strong 1.6 TDI. In addition, 1.5 TSI (150 hp) and 2.0 TSI (272 hp) are represented in the gasoline range. Even in the Old World there is a rechargeable hybrid Passat GTE, its power plant includes a 156-horsepower 1.4 TSI and a 115-horsepower electric motor – their total output is 218 hp.
The current Volkswagen Passat in Russia is offered by TSI gasoline engines with a volume of 1.4 (125 and 150 hp) and 1.8 liters (180 hp). Also in the lineup is a 150-horsepower two-liter diesel engine. Engines are paired with 6MKP, as well as six- and seven-speed “automatic” DSG. Note that from January to August 2019, VW sold 1,186 Passat sedans and station wagons in the Russian Federation, of which only 59 turned out to be with diesel engines (the share is 5%).
The Russian office of the brand has not yet announced the prices for the updated model. Judging by the official website of VW, the starting price tag of the pre-reform “four-door” in the Russian Federation is 1 819 000 rubles, the purchase of a “five-door” costs at least 2 139 000 rubles.
Meanwhile, the Jetta should return to the Russian market in the relatively near future. A new generation model will come to us from Mexico. At the end of last month, it became known that Volkswagen received a Vehicle Type Approval (OTTS) for it, but the timing for entering our market has not yet been announced.
