Car thefts in the capital have become less frequent: over 11 months, car thefts have been registered by 25% or 588 less than during the same period in 2018, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The most popular brands among metropolitan car thieves are Toyota, Kia, Hyundai and Lada.
Most often, during the theft, cars are opened with special devices and the alarm is turned off using electronic scanners. One of the most common devices for criminals on slang is called “long arm” or “fishing rod”, they told the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Moscow.
The second most popular place is opening the door mechanically. On the third – theft with the substitution of the second key while watching the car “buyer”. From an advertisement for the sale on the Internet, criminals will find out what anti-theft devices the car is equipped with, they ask the owner to show the presence of two keys, when inspecting a car they will distract his attention and secretly change one original key to a duplicate.
A common way of hijacking is also a tow truck – while the attackers present the driver with fake documents for the car.
Most often, the Interior Ministry emphasizes, the crime is not spontaneous, it is preceded by serious preparatory work.
