The time has come when the qualitative progress of cars made in China can no longer be ignored. Where does the Changan CS35Plus aim, and does it hit the target?
Cars from China are really getting better. Maybe their incredible amount goes into quality, or maybe the fact is that the auto giants of the Celestial Empire are luring foreign specialists and buying whole car brands. One way or another, from the “just drive” category, Chinese models confidently stepped over into the “you can take” category. Such is the Changan CS35Plus – it remains only to figure out: if you take that instead. Yes, we pose the question in that way. It will be strange to pretend that there are no bestsellers like Creta and Captura on the market that have been known for a long time, and newcomers like Chery Tiggo 4, which claims to be in the same niche. In addition, the Changan brand is not so much heard.
At best, a potential buyer will recall the compact compact SUV CS35 five years ago. CS35Plus – this is not restyling and not a different body on the old chassis: it is an independent model that has grown significantly in size – has become 165 millimeters longer and added 4 centimeters to the wheelbase. And so it became exactly on a par with Renault Kaptur.
Comparable and prices: the base Changan CS35 Plus costs 1,079,900 rubles (if this is without discounts and other special offers). At the same time, the package includes two airbags, ESP, tire pressure sensors, air conditioning, a light sensor, 16-inch alloy wheels and a media system with a 10.25-inch screen and additional USB-charging for rear passengers.
Engine one: 1.6-liter aspirated. In the official brochure, the power indicated is 128 horsepower, but in the documents for cars – 117. Most likely, the difference is explained by the fact that Russia receives a modernized engine of the past generation with conventional distributed injection, and a new direct one on the Chinese domestic market. Transmission – 5-speed “mechanics” or 6-band Japanese automatic Aisin. The drive, as often happens in this class, is only front-wheel drive. In the comments to the tests of such cars, we invariably see remarks like “why do you need such a car?”, But the real market has a different opinion. With front-wheel drive, they buy not only Cretu, Kaptur or the larger and more expensive Kia Sportage – even Renault Duster has a half-front-wheel drive version. And this is not so surprising: front-wheel drive crossovers replaced the station wagons to the Russians, which are no longer on the market. The bonus is a high clearance. At CS35 Plus, it is 180 millimeters.
What will Changan offer against the backdrop of popular competitors? CS35Plus comes with a trump card, offering interior quality and refinement of appearance, which is not available to the vast majority of them. Yes, the main and main sensation – Changan CS35Plus is made with high quality and expensive. This is felt in materials, gaps, design study. Perhaps Creta and Kaptur cannot compete with Changan in these things. When could this be said about the Chinese car?
The front seats are comfortable with good lateral support. The steering column is adjustable for reach and tilt. The steering wheel itself is similar to that of BMW, but when was this comparison considered offensive? Climate control panel touch. And even the music sounds good, even if the media system does not have the most understandable adjustments.
The ride is comfortable behind, there really is a lot of legroom, and the ceiling is molded by an arc over the heads to increase the volume (again, hello Crete). Noise isolation is good, but it feels noisier in front, and the main source of rustling is tires.
Frankly, at first all this interior splendor is discouraging. And, if a panoramic roof, which is on the Chinese market, were left in the car, then a portion of corvalol might be especially impressionable. But that’s not all.
In CS35Plus appeared what we value European cars for: attention to detail. It seems that all this is not so important, but nice: a large handle for closing the trunk, a niche for an umbrella, plastic-locked locks and wide-open doors with a convenient exit and protection of thresholds from flying dirt … Add to this convenient original organizer pockets for small things on the back of the front seatbacks and the soft plastic interior after all. Trunk volume is 403 liters, but with the seats folded, it grows to 950.
Externally, CS35Plus is similar to compiling different styles of the German school of design, but this is not perceived in a negative way. On the contrary, it turned out rather inspired by this design a new image, concise and complete. There is no talk of blind copying, and the correct guidelines can most likely be attributed to the pluses.
Wheel arches seem large, but this is due to the wide edging of unpainted plastic. In Russia, 16- and 17-inch wheels are offered, but in China there is an even larger option. True, the tire profile is already rather low: 225/45 R18.
The crossover inherited the chassis architecture from its predecessor CS35 (the company calls this platform EPS): the McPherson strut in front and the torsion beam in the back. This is almost a classic for this type of car. The power steering is electric.
The chassis copes with its responsibilities. CS35Plus travels moderately energy intensive and reliable. Medium-sized primer potholes pass without unnecessary blows, although he is far from the vigorous permissiveness of the Nissan Terrano / Renault Duster (they, I recall, did not pass even on frankly broken forest roads). Pleased with really good brakes with an informative and transparent pedal effort.
On asphalt CS35Plus goes without yaw and nervousness, in extreme modes there are no revelations, “front-wheel” behavior with the demolition of the front axle. You should not wait for a refined controllability and a gamble, the car feels as much as possible averaged in its habits. However, the owners are unlikely to try to get the maximum from the crossover in its high-speed cornering – rather, they will be interested in dynamics.
And it’s not that hurricane. With four journalists on board, the crossover generally ceased to rush somewhere – after 90 km / h it was very reluctant to accelerate. According to the passport for the version with a gun, 14 seconds of acceleration to 100 km / h are declared. This is even slower than the Creta with a 1.6 engine (12.3 seconds). True, the Korean crossover will roar at the same time. Compensation for Chang’s excessive slowness is the consumption of 92nd gasoline.
Who should use such a car – quite comfortable, not too noisy, stylish, well-equipped, well-assembled and rather slow? Obviously, the first candidates are city dwellers. Those who almost never have to overtake on suburban two-lane roads or make their way through the snowy countryside. Those for whom design, quality of finish and rich equipment are more important than cross-country ability and dynamics. CS35Plus – as the latest model of the Chinese smartphone with all the bells and whistles. If a few years ago they were regarded as incomprehensible upstarts, and their money was carried to the cash desks of Samsung and Apple, now in many segments Huawei models compete with them on an equal footing and have already found their loyal fans.
Changan brand has been harnessed in our market for a long time, but after the premiere of the CS35Plus model it has a chance to go fast. Strong stroke – a guarantee for 5 years or 150 thousand kilometers. At the time of the test, the first batch of 150 cars was already sold out. And representatives of the brand promise in the near future a few more new products. / m
