One possible way out of the situation is to change the status of the model. At the beginning of last year, UAZ did a similar trick with the Hunter model. Then the SUV changed its name to UAZ 2924 and was certified in the N1G category – as an off-road truck with a maximum mass of not more than 3.5 tons. This gave the automaker the opportunity to avoid the requirements of “passenger” certification, in particular, not to put an airbag on the model.
However, in the case of Jimny, everything is somewhat more complicated, since the amendments to the certification documents in Europe are not enough. The company will have to get rid of the back sofa, leaving only one passenger and driver in the car. However, Suzuki has a second option – to replace the one and a half liter “aspirated” with a more environmentally friendly engine, for example, with the 1.4 Boosterjet turbo engine, which is also installed on the Vitara, or offer a hybrid modification. But it will take much more time.
