Sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia in 2020 may fall by half due to the coronavirus pandemic
This statement was made by the consulting company Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Interestingly, this is only one of the possible scenarios (there are four in all), and it is also the most pessimistic. In a good situation, the decline in auto sales in 2020 will be 19% (up to 1.4 million), in 2021 – 3%. A more pessimistic forecast implies that sales this year will fall by 48% (up to 900 thousand cars), and in 2021 – by 31%. The most likely option for BCG is the intermediate option: a market drop of 25-37% in 2020 and 12-18% in 2021.
Meanwhile, at the end of 2019, the Russian car market fell by 2.3%. According to the forecast of the Association of European Businesses (AEB), in 2020 sales should have decreased by 2.1%. Previously, the government included the autoretail in the list of sectors of the Russian economy that were most affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
