The German manufacturer is going to evaluate the effect of the use of biopolymers. The pilot project is being implemented jointly with the Israeli startup UBQ Materials
The technology developed by UBQ makes it possible to turn organic waste into an environmentally friendly biomaterial similar to conventional thermoplastics. Moreover, according to the company, it is “the most environmentally friendly polymer in the world.” The process of obtaining new material begins with the processing of municipal solid waste, which is 70–80 percent organic and the remaining 20–30 plastic.
Organic materials break down to basic lignin, cellulose, fiber and sugar, which are then mixed back into a common solution. To obtain an innovative thermoplastic material, recycled polymers are added to it. Developments UBQ is already being used to create the Luca electric car body, developed by students from the Eindhoven University of Technology. Daimler plans to evaluate the prospects of using bioplastics in production cars.
