PSA plans to invest more than 200 million euros in its plant in French Mulhouse, most of which will be used to prepare for the production of a new model (the company did not name it). Today, the company produces a liftback and Peugeot 508 station wagon, as well as a DS 7 Crossback crossover. Previously, the previous Peugeot 2008 SUV was also assembled at the site, but the second-generation model “moved” to the Spanish city of Vigo. Edition L’argusReferring to its own sources, it reports that the production of the next Peugeot 308 will be launched in Mulhouse (the current 308th is assembled in Sochaux), and the family will be expanded
Information that in the third generation Peugeot 308 a new version will join the five-door hatchback and station wagon appeared in July (we don’t take into account the sedan, it is available only in China). As it was reported then, the next hatch was assigned the in-plant index P51, the “shed” – P52, and the mysterious modification takes place immediately under two code designations – P54 and P54US. The last code supposedly means that such a 308th is designed for the US market, where Peugeot is going to return. In the summer, French media outlets suggested that the P54 is nothing more than a crossover. And now the L’argus portal is just sure of it.
Most likely, they will not do a full-fledged SUV – the Peugeot 308 will get a protective body kit and roof rails, plus they can increase ground clearance. In which body the cross version will appear – is still unknown. It is possible that both the hatchback and the station wagon will have such an option (for example, this is what Ford did with the latest Focus).
It is expected that the new generation Peugeot 308 will be offered with gasoline and diesel engines, in addition, the model will surely be turned into an electric car.
According to preliminary data, the new family will be on the assembly line in 2021, but the premiere may be celebrated next year.
Recall that the second generation Peugeot 308 debuted in 2013, a couple of years ago, the hatch and wagon modestly updated. According to Focus2move, last year in Europe about 158,000 such cars were sold, which is 2% less than in 2017. For comparison, Opel Astra in 2018 in the Old World gained 168,000 owners (-30%), 210,000 customers (-12%) stopped the choice for Ford Focus, and Volkswagen Golf sold 502,000 copies (-9%) .
In January-September 2019, according to statistics from the same resource (Focus2move does not yet provide more recent data), the Frenchman is again in the red, however, like most of the main competitors: about 112,000 Peugeot 308 cars were sold in Europe (- 7%), Astra’s sales amounted to 118,000 units (-11%), Focus – 182,000 units (+ 13%), VW Golf – 346,000 units (-12%).
Peugeot hatchback left the Russian market last year, whether the new generation model will reach us – there is no information yet.
Meanwhile, the Opel Astra is also preparing to change its generation. Most likely, the next Peugeot 308 will be the closest relative of the Opel model (the French acquired the German brand in 2017), which means that a cross version may appear in the Astra.
