General Motors introduced the fifth generation Cadillac Escalade – the most luxurious and largest SUV in the current model range of the concern. In the Escalade engine range, diesel first appeared; the list of options included air suspension; the main technological innovation was a three-section 38-inch screen, deployed to the driver.
Having changed the generation, the Cadillac Escalade remains recognizable: the side and rear of the SUV have not stylistically changed, and the design of the front of the body is made in the spirit of the “younger” XT6 crossover. Continuity with other Escalades is ensured by chopped forms, a proprietary pentagonal radiator grill and vertical daytime running lights.
The Escalade is based on the new GMT T1XX platform, known for the Chevrolet Silverado pickup and the new Chevrolet Tahoe / Suburban. The Cadillac SUV inherited the rear multi-link from the “brothers” in the concern (the previous generation car had a continuous axle) with the possibility of installing air cylinders, a ten-speed automatic transmission and basic rear-wheel drive with an optional front axle clutch and a reduction gear.
The pride of the new Cadillac Escalade is a curved OLED display with a total diagonal of 38 inches. It promises a deep black color, a large color range and a pixel density twice that of a 4K UHD TV.
The digital panel is deployed to the driver and consists of three monitors located on two levels: in the foreground there is a 14.2-inch virtual instrument panel, on the left, on the 7.2-inch monitor, auxiliary data on the duration of the trip and fuel consumption are displayed, and on the right is a 16.9-inch touchscreen multimedia complex, which can be controlled with the washer.
However, the Escalade did not completely abandon the analog keys: the climate controls are regulated by the usual buttons, and the minimum steering dial is on the multi-wheel. There are no more “poker” automatic transmissions in the Cadillac: transmission modes are switched by an unstable joystick on the central tunnel.
The new chassis allowed the fifth generation Escalade to be noticeably more spacious and roomy: a conventional SUV offers passengers of the third row 886 millimeters of space – 40 percent more than its predecessor – and in the elongated Escalade ESV on the gallery between the rows there are already 933 millimeters. Trunk volume has also grown: the seven-seater Escalade offers 722 liters (an increase of 68 percent compared to its predecessor).
For the first time on the Cadillacs, a navigation system with augmented reality debuted. The list of electronic assistants includes all-round cameras, a night vision system with infrared sensors for detecting pedestrians and large animals, as well as a modernized Super Cruise track autopilot with automatic lane change on highways.
Rear passengers have two 12.6-inch tablets that can interact with smartphones on Android. Escalade is equipped with 19 speakers and a subwoofer as standard, and the optional SUV can be understaffed with 36 speakers and three amplifiers.
At the start of sales, Escalade can be ordered with a 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engine with 426 horsepower and 623 Nm of torque or a 3.0-liter turbodiesel (281 horsepower, 623 Nm of torque). In the future, the range of units is likely to replenish with a hybrid power plant.
The new Escalade is equipped with an adaptive Air Ride suspension, which automatically adjusts ride height according to the load. In addition, the SUV can “squat” at high speed to improve aerodynamics and fall by 52 millimeters when loading. When driving off-road, the air suspension can be forced to raise to its maximum position.
Sales of the fifth generation Cadillac Escalade in the United States will begin in the third quarter. Prices will be announced in the coming months. Escalade will also appear in Russia, but the timing has not yet been announced. The SUV of the previous generation with us costs from 4,990,000 rubles for the version with a standard bodywork and from 5,290,000 rubles for an extended modification of the ESV.
