The APIA report on car sales in October shows that, for the second month in a row, Romanians bought more electrified cars than diesel.
The trend of electrification of the Romanian car market is becoming more and more obvious. According to the data of the Association of Romanian Car Manufacturers and Importers (APIA) for October, 1,951 electric and hybrid cars and only 1,434 diesel cars were sold in Romania.
The situation in October is not unique. And a month ago, in September, the registrations of new electric and hybrid vehicles surpassed those of diesel cars. Specifically, in the ninth month of the year, 1,433 cars with 100% hybrid or 100% electric propulsion systems and only 1,243 diesel-powered were sold to us.
Thus, if in August the market share of diesel in the total new car market was 18.9%, and in September it decreased to 14.1%, in October the indicator stood at 15.1%. The increase in the share of diesel cars in October compared to September does not mean that sales of diesel-powered cars are growing again, but that the segment of petrol-powered cars is also falling sharply.
This detail is visible if we look at the evolution of sales of electrified cars (electric and hybrid). In August they represented only 12.4% of the total car market, in September their share rose to 16.2%, to occupy 20.5% in October.
After the first ten months of 2021, 66.9% of the total of 96,742 cars sold in Romania were refueled, 20.3% diesel and 12.8% electrified. The pace at which the phenomenon of electrification in our car market is expanding is a lightning one if we consider that after the first ten months of 2020, electric and hybrid cars represented only 6.6% of the market.
APIA data show that the leader in sales of 100% electric cars is, after the first ten months of 2021, the Volkswagen brand (749 units), followed by Dacia (342 units) and Hyundai (307 units). In terms of sales of plug-in hybrid cars, the ranking is led by Mercedes-Benz (441 units), BMW (287 units) and Hyundai (246 units), and the podium of the hybrid segment without plug-in ( full hybris) is occupied, in order, by Toyota (5,814 units), Hyundai (797 units) and Renault (286 units).
It is important to note that the only brand on the podium in all sections of the electrified car market is Hyundai. This proves that, in addition to the leading position of importers and the second brand in Romania in the general ranking, Hyundai is well positioned in all future segments of the car market.
– The rebound of the car market. Hyundai has become the leader in imports
– The Romanian car market is losing ground in Europe
