Versions with a basic two-liter engine will be available from next year, but for now, the Sonata is only offered with a 2.5-liter engine and a 6-speed automatic. We tested such a modification.
A new generation of Hyundai Sonata reached Russia in the year of its world debut. At home, in South Korea, the car debuted in March 2019, and in April it was shown at the New York Auto Show – North America was and remains an important market for such cars. If the previous Sonata, which we sold here, was made in the American manner thoroughly, but still somewhat rudely, then the new one is perceived as a more refined product.
This is especially true of the interior – if in the previous Sonata the finishing materials could be called unpretentious, then the new interior looks more pleasant. The airflow deflectors are edged with neat chrome stripes, temperature indicators are mounted in the climate control knobs, and the media system received a two-section display with a diagonal of 10.25 inches. At first glance, this “widescreen TV” seems redundant, but there is definitely a sense in its implementation – when the navigation is on on the main screen, you can display an additional, for example, list of radio stations. But the matter is not only in the texture of the plastic and the area of the displays – it is important that the design has changed qualitatively.
The proportions of the car are adjusted: now its silhouette is close to the tribe “four-door coupe”. The sedan added 45 millimeters in length, while the wheelbase increased by 35 millimeters. The overhangs decreased and the seats were moved closer to the ground. However, when you are driving, you reflexively strive to shift even lower – it feels like in the previous Sonata the landing was more athletic, and in the new there is not much space above your head. On the back sofa, however, there are no problems with this – people will also be quite comfortable with basketball growth.
If it is difficult to find fault with the clarity and informativeness of a digital instrument cluster, the new button selector of the machine is definitely a very unusual thing. At least for a person who was driving a business-class sedan, and not in the cockpit of a city bus. There, a similar “control panel” of the transmission is common. But you have to get used to it: after a number of cases overseas, when drivers forgot to put the automatic gear lever in the “parking lot” and risked getting under their own car, the American regulatory authorities demanded action. What was done: if you stop in the new Sonata and open the door, P mode will turn on automatically.
Sonata is built on a new modular platform – it is logical to expect that it will form the basis of the next-generation Kia Optima or the proportionate Santa Fe crossover. In the power cage of the cabin, the connections of the threshold with the rear pillar of the body are reinforced. In order to reduce vibration, the rear cross member has become more massive. And, in accordance with stricter passive safety test standards, the front parts responsible for deformation upon impact with a small overlap have been reworked. At the same time, thanks to the wider use of high-strength steel parts made by hot forging, Hyundai specialists were able to reduce the mass of the “naked” Sonata body – it weighs 24 kilograms less than the previous version.
Hyundai Sonata enters the Russian market with two gasoline engines. The youngest 2.0-liter of the Nu family develops 150 horsepower and 192 Nm of torque. More powerful, with a volume of 2.5 liters, gives out 180 forces and 232 “Newton”. However, a sedan with a 2.0-liter engine can be ordered only after the new year – at the initial stage only version 2.5 is available. Both engines rely on a 6-speed hydromechanical machine. The Korean concern also has an 8-speed automatic transmission, but it is not offered for the Russian version of Sonata, although Hyundai crossovers available in our country have already tried it on – for example, Hyundai Tucson relies on a two-liter diesel engine.
The 2.5 engine of the Theta family received a number of improvements – in particular, pushers with hydraulic compensators were introduced in the valve mechanism, the timing was changed, an additional thermostat appeared in the cooling system, and the oil pump received an overflow valve.
Hyundai Sonata with the 2.5-liter engine in the lineup is accelerating confidently, but its character cannot be called explosive: from zero to “hundreds” in 9.2 seconds. It is most convenient to keep the engine in the middle speed range – if you press the gas pedal to the floor, it becomes noisy in the cabin. In the interior, which Hyundai designers took to a new level, you unwittingly expect the silence and tranquility of the executive sedan.
In order to improve handling, the engineers changed the geometry of the front suspension and strengthened the front and rear subframes, and in the rear suspension, in addition, they changed the shape and stiffness of the longitudinal arms. On the roads of the Krasnodar Territory (of very different quality!), The sedan does not throw unpleasant surprises to the driver – in general, his behavior is clear and predictable. The reactive steering force in steep turns is, of course, largely artificial, but this, on the whole, does not interfere with prescribing the trajectory of movement. Not noticed the new Sonata and in a tendency to roll. But on smooth irregularities and waves of asphalt, which are not uncommon on our roads, there is a diagonal buildup – however, hardly perceptible.
Hyundai Sonata has not spared universal digitalization as well – the retention system in the lane vigilantly ensures that the car is held strictly in the middle, without shifting to the marking. Adaptive cruise control and a collision avoidance system are available – both front and rear. However, the full range of electronic assistants is only included in the Prestige performance for 1,999,000 rubles. For other trim levels, it is available for a surcharge of 100 thousand rubles. / M
