Daimler and BMW are going to order 60 Tesla electric cars through their joint venture Free Now, which, in fact, is a mobile application for calling a taxi from a smartphone. They came to this decision because they wanted to expand the fleet of service vehicles to cover large cities in Germany.
Free Now used to be called MyTaxi and was a simple taxi application used in Europe. Daimler acquired it in 2014, and last year the German automaker entered into an unexpected partnership with a rival BMW, and they invested more than $ 1 billion in the company.
The choice fell on Tesla for very simple and understandable reasons. German car manufacturers want to make the Free Now service more “green”, and accordingly focus on electric cars, rental electric scooters, electric bicycles. When it came to acquiring 60 electric cars to work in Hamburg, it seems they just didn’t find another option and decided to order Tesla. Why then not electric cars Mercedes-Benz or BMW? According to the publication electrek, everything is extremely simple: the company’s fleet of data does not have a single car suitable for service in a taxi. Unfortunately, it is still not known exactly which models were chosen by German manufacturers to realize their goals, but soon this secret should be revealed.
By the way, attention to the Free Now service in Germany is growing inexorably. In 2019, the service was used by 20% more passengers than in 2018, and the number of drivers increased by 27 percent to more than 28,000.
