In 2019, the contract of the German Association of the Automotive Industry and the Messe Frankfurt Exhibition Center expired, which means that in 2021 the International Motor Show in Frankfurt (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, IAA) will not be held.
Within a few weeks, the organizers of the exhibition should choose a new city for its holding. The main candidates were Cologne, Hamburg, Hanover, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, but then the list was reduced to the last three. But the matter will not be limited to just one transfer of the car dealership – the association intends to change the concept of the motor show itself by 2021 to make participation in it more attractive for car manufacturers.
“The ideas and concepts of Frankfurt were impressive. However, after evaluating all the components, IAA 2021 will no longer be held in this city, ”the German Association of the Automotive Industry said in a statement.
Meanwhile, car companies are increasingly refusing to exhibit their latest products at car dealerships, preferring online presentations and independent premieres. Last fall, the largest automakers called the format of the motor show obsolete. They believe that it can be replaced by a new one, in the center of which will be not the final product, but the “concept of mobility”. In other words, companies will represent developments in the field of “mobility of the future”, and machines will only become an application to various services.
In 2019, Nissan, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Citroen, Infiniti, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Rolls-Royce, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota and Volvo refused to participate in the Frankfurt Motor Show, and Ford did not come to the Geneva Motor Show and Volvo. It also became known earlier that in 2020 Lamborghini will miss the Geneva exhibition, and Volkswagen will not be present at the Paris Motor Show.
