IBM Research has developed a new type of battery in which there are no heavy metals like cobalt and nickel
All these materials will be replaced by seawater, or rather, special components that will be extracted from this water. Unfortunately, IBM did not disclose what materials have become substitutes for heavy metals, but it is known that they were found by using the technology of “semantic enrichment”. It is based on artificial intelligence and machine learning methods that help researchers test hypotheses while processing the results of millions of experiments.
In any case, it is reported that new batteries are superior in all respects to conventional lithium-ion batteries: faster charging speed, higher energy storage density, higher power, lower risk of ignition and cost. In addition, the transition to the production of cathodic chemistry from sea water will make it possible to abandon the “dirty”, from the point of view of ecology, methods of nickel mining.
