If you’re looking for a new truck, you might become overwhelmed by all of the different options. One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is choosing between diesel vs. gas trucks.

Luckily for you, we are here to help with just that. So if you would like to learn more then keep on reading and we will take you through everything that you will want to know!

Differences Between Diesel vs. Gas Truck

Longevity

When it comes to longevity, diesel vehicles tend to win out. They can usually last for hundreds of thousands of miles. Some people like to joke that a diesel truck isn’t even broken in yet until it drives 100,000 miles.

Diesel engines are made with stronger engine blocks and can handle higher compression ratios. This means that they can handle hard work easier than gas trucks.

A gas truck can last just as long if the engine only needs to move a heavy load every so often.

Of course, you’re going to need to choose the right wheels no matter what kind of truck you get so that it can last as long as possible.

Maintenance

Maintaining a gas engine is usually going to cost you less than maintaining a Diesel engine. A diesel engine can hold more oil but is more costly to change.

Between the exhaust and fuel systems, there are a lot of parts and filters that need to be changed out that aren’t in gas systems. Also, new diesel engines need diesel exhaust fluid which has to be added to meet emissions requirements.

Diesel vehicles run at lower rpm. This reduces wear on a lot of engine parts.

Fuel Mileage

Not too long ago, it was common to see 25-plus mpg from a big diesel truck. However, many drivers see less than twenty mpg.

With that said, light-duty diesel trucks can expect EPA ratings up to 30 mpg. If the vehicle is used to haul light loads for long distances, then a mid-size or half-ton diesel truck might be the right pick.

A diesel engine is going to perform at its best when it is loaded up. A heavily loaded diesel truck is usually going to give you more mpg than a gas truck with the same load.

To put it simply, if a heavy-duty truck is needed all day every day then you will likely save fuel money with a diesel vehicle. If the truck is going to be driving empty or have a light load, then you can probably save on fuel by going with a mid-size diesel truck.

The Importance of Knowing the Differences for Diesel vs. Gas Trucks

Hopefully, after reading the above article, you now feel that you understand the differences between diesel vs. gas trucks. As we can see, each kind of truck has its pros and cons.
