The previous Toyota RAV4 crossover went to us for a test in the maximum configuration, equipped, as it seemed to me then, with everything that my soul could wish for. However, this is quite unpretentious for me, while for other people it can turn out to be truly insatiable. Because the new generation of the Japanese crossover is “stuffed” with the envy of the spacecraft
But, of course, the story about him should begin with the technical part. Long sold in Europe, this car is now built on the basis of the “architecture” of the TNGA, the same that underlies the Prius and CH-R. RAV4 now has a lot in common with the “little brother”, in particular – a large display that rises above the dashboard. But we will consider the interior design later, there is still much interesting outside.
For all ages
According to the creators, the new RAV4 should embody a more brutal style and character, its appearance in some way echoes the “Land Cruiser” and “Prado”. Perhaps this is so, but a buyer who is interested in automotive design cannot help but notice features similar to the Mazda CX5, Subaru Forester and Jaguar F-Pace. “Hodgepodge”? Not. And if so, then no more than other models. All at least a little bit, but copy each other, as a result, still creating original, catchy images.
Gradually, the new generation of RAV4 will also be remembered, while it is rare and looks unusual. Unusual is, first of all, a large “amount” of design. The crossover has many external parts worth considering. For example, a black “gap” under the front edge of the hood. For additional ventilation of the engine compartment? No, this is just an artistic element that draws attention to itself. Black horizontal stripes are visible on the rear pillars, apparently hinting at the idea of a “floating” roof, which no one has realized. Unfortunately, RAV4 does not implement: the strips turned out to be too narrow for this. Maybe it was worth making the rear pillars black entirely? Or would it look too similar to the two-tone versions of the Peugeot 3008?
Some models are distinguished by the “aggression” of the front end, while the new RAV4, I would call the rear end aggressive. This impression creates an increased tilt of the rear window, again, referring to the Mazda and Jaguar. And the taillights and the chrome jumper between them are exactly from the Lexus cars. Such “feed”, perhaps, also contributes to the general improvement of aerodynamics, but the fifth door collects dirt on itself – more than enough. Rear view camera lens too.
In general, the “old” RAV4 for some reason was considered a car for people of older and retirement age. From my point of view, the external design didn’t correspond to this at all. What about the dynamics? Also no. Some conservatism was observed in the cabin, but the eclectic scatter of buttons and control keys of different systems is also, rather, something youthful. Aged people love rigor and order. And in the new RAV4 this is much more. Although the dashboard is now almost like a youthful model CH-R. Here the 8-inch display also rises above the dashboard and attracts attention, because it seems that it covers part of the windshield. But you sit behind the wheel and make sure that it does not close anything, its upper edge does not protrude above the dashboard, which is even lower in the new car than in the previous one.
True, the size of this “tablet” with a diagonal of 8 inches for RAV4 is more optimal than for CH-R. Functional too. Three main parameters are displayed on the main screen: a map of the area, a source of “music” and average fuel consumption. Separately, there is a menu page on which there are many icons. You can expand the map to full screen, or you can display a diagram of fuel consumption during the trip. The graphics resemble Lexus.
The dual-zone “climate” adjustment knobs are large and resemble jet engine nozzles. The surface of the handles themselves is rubberized and grooved, like those located directly on the multimedia screen. In general, there are a lot of such elements – rubberized and embossed – in the new crossover. For example, the inner surfaces of the door handles, the niche in the center under the dashboard and the gadget shelves in front of the front passenger. Deliberately coarse mesh closed speakers in the front doors. All this remotely resembles a Jeep Renegade and hints that the crossover has acquired a more off-road than a “parquet” character. This is partly true.
In the previous RAV4, only one 12-volt outlet was intended for rear passengers. Now for them there are two USB connectors for charging gadgets. Plus, two of the same connectors are sheltered inside the central armrest box. And one more – directly under the dashboard, in the middle, it is from him that the multimedia system “reads” music.
The grouping of control buttons for various systems is now much more intelligible. But a set of buttons is hiding to the left of the steering wheel; the driver cannot see them at all. But the cruise control is now controlled not by a separate archaic lever, but by buttons directly on the steering wheel spoke. And the “cruise” is now adaptive!
The dashboard in the top versions of the new RAV4 resembles that of the Toyota Corolla. In the large semicircle of the speedometer in the center, an on-board computer “reproducing” a lot of information is “inscribed”. Some icons may be small, but in any case you will find a display of each system and the necessary parameter. Unless the sound signals given by the car can always be correlated with the image on the dashboard. Often there will be a squeak – and guess what exactly turned on or off? However, an important warning or message will always show up.
All comfort options known from the previous model migrated to the new RAV4: keyless access to the cabin, the ability to remotely start and warm up the engine (via the Toyota warm options mobile application), memory for driver seat settings, heated steering wheel, windshield, front and rear seats . Now they have also added a system of all-round cameras. The front seats have changed, they have become more embossed, but the fixation of the driver’s body is added not so much by the side rollers as the padding, into which you fall a little. Noticeable “ears” in the upper parts of the backs do not add much convenience and they appeared here, it seems, in connection with the general trend: this is found on some Chinese models.
Readers ask us to talk more about the transformation of the cabin. You are welcome. Parts of the back of the rear sofa are adjustable for tilt, however, to a very small extent. And, of course, they add up in a ratio of 1: 2, most of them are located on the right. Despite the fact that the sofa cushion is not divided and does not rise, parts of the back rest on it strictly flush with the raised floor of the trunk. But if necessary, the raised floor can be located a little lower (see photo). The reserve is represented by a dock.
Depending on the height of the raised floor, the boot volume is 542 or 580 liters. There is no path at the rear of the trunk, the height of the raised floor above the ground in an empty car is about 69 cm. The tailgate in the test version was motorized, with the function of opening with a wave of the foot under the rear bumper.
Similar and different modes
The electronic “tidy” of the car can be easily repainted by selecting one of the three modes of movement with the buttons located next to the selector of the machine. When the ECO mode is selected, the speedometer rim turns green, in the Normal position it turns white, in the Sport position it turns red. Scales of the tachometer, temperature and fuel gauge indicators always remain red.
So far, the new RAV4 is presented with only two gasoline engines, also new. This is a two-liter 149-horsepower unit and a 2.5-liter 199-horsepower – it was he who was on the test car. I can’t say that almost two hundred “horses” too quickly drive the crossover forward. Apparently, the car is too heavy (gross weight – a little over two tons), because compliance with the Euro 5 environmental standard is unlikely to strongly oppose the dynamics. Well, a modern eight-band (!!) machine too. Yes, the 2.5-liter versions of the RAV4 are equipped with such a machine, and the two-liter versions are equipped with a CVT.
Or maybe I was mistaken when refueling? It is permissible to “feed” the car with 92nd gasoline, but I filled only the 95th. According to theory, on the 92nd gasoline you go very little faster, but less economically. This is not always confirmed by practice, but special instruments are needed for accurate measurements. In this case, the permissible octane number of fuel bothers me in that the compression ratio of the 2.5-liter engine is 13, while even with its values of 11 and 10, firms advise car owners not to get involved in 92-m gasoline.
It remains a mystery why the manufacturing company is silent about the acceleration of the new 2.5-liter RAV`ika from zero to 100 km / h. The indicator should have been relatively good, because from 80 to 120 km / h I was able to accelerate in about 7 seconds. Not a racing indicator, but far from a failure. This is a whole second less than the previous version with a diesel engine and automatic six (he took a hundred from a place in 10 seconds). Approximately seven-second acceleration was tested in all automatic modes, as well as in 4th and 5th gears when manually selected.
How so, you ask, so there is no difference between ECO, Normal and Sport? Why then are they needed? Surprisingly, according to the driver’s sensations, there is a difference. In ECO mode, the crossover is perceived as really “thoughtful,” and it is during acceleration. In contrast, you expect a little more “fire” from Sport mode than it offers. However, an impartial stopwatch showed very close numbers in all three cases.
Here it is impossible not to mention this. When switching to manual mode at a speed, an eight-band automatic always chose fifth gear, which was accompanied by a noticeable jump in engine speed. In fact, the sports transmission mode was first turned on, and only then the driver was free to switch up or down himself.
What else is the difference between the modes? Of course, in profitability. Again, let’s test the car in different situations. Driving on the Moscow Ring Road with an average load of the ring with the Normal position turned on ended with a 9-liter result (directly in the traffic jam for a short time was 14 l). On the highway, the flow rate increased to 10 liters, because the speed was the maximum allowable, in addition, I used the Normal and Sport modes. The position of ECO almost did not improve the final figure at the end of the 100-kilometer distance.
Along with the poor sound quality of the audio system, the first owners of the crossover are unhappy with the multimedia graphics, the disappearance of individual watches from the dashboard, and the lack of auto mode for all electric window keys except the driver’s. This claim is incomprehensible to me: the backlight of these keys, alas, has not been made, as before, but everyone has an auto mode. Or is it a feature of the test configuration?
In a more relaxed mode, on a regular highway, the flow rate ranged from 7.5 to 8.0 liters.
I did not use manual switching, and in Sport I switched infrequently. With the general smoothness of the gear shift in sports mode, it is felt more distinctly. And what about a “cruise”? So it really brought success: at a speed of 110 km / h, the consumption was from 6.7 to 6.9 liters, at 125 km / h from 7.3 to 7.6 liters – again, in the ECO and Normal positions. I must say, an enviable profitability for a motor with a capacity of 200 liters. from. The difference between the speedometer and the real speed is about 4-5 km / h.
But if the dynamics of the 2.5-liter crossover can be considered not incendiary, but decent, then its general character is far from sports. The driver clearly feels that under the bottom of this version with all-wheel drive there is a significant clearance (according to company data for 230 mm, but my measurements showed about 190 mm). The car sways noticeably on huge wheels with a wheel diameter of as much as 19 inches, especially during gusts of crosswind. Not everything is smooth with the rolls in the corners during sharp and even not very sharp maneuvers.
That is, choosing a new RAV4, more count on a smooth movement in space, quick, but without a “twinkle”. In the corporate brochure, I read that the model has improved sound insulation. It really is very quiet inside, and the engine runs quietly, with the track speed of “2000” and below it seems that it does not exist at all. It would be nice to listen to music if it sounded a little better (it was scolded by the first buyers of the new RAV`ika). In addition, in order to achieve optimal volume, it was necessary to twist its knob halfway. There are no complaints about the perception of media and the organization of the file menu.
The steering gear of the new RAV4 is “aggravated”. Firstly, the number of revolutions of the steering wheel from lock to lock dropped to 2.5. Secondly, the effort on the steering wheel pleasantly increased. Although I would, as always, “clamp” it a little extra.
New security systems systematically bring us closer to full autopilot, and in this regard, RAV4 is not far behind progress. Now it boasts radar cruise control and a tracking system for marking lines. I liked the adaptive cruise because when I felt for an obstacle in the form of a slow car in front of me, the crossover slowed down, but even when I started to change lanes to the adjacent lane, I started to increase speed very actively. In such cases, it often happens that a test car with a similar system “rests” on some truck and stubbornly does not want to overtake it, even while in a free lane. Apparently, the direction of the radar beam in RAV4 is better aligned.
The strip control system is distinctly triggered, but not too persistent. In some ways, this is even good: at speed you do not experience unexpected jolts in the “side”. If you neglect the force on the steering wheel and try to readjust without a turn signal, a sound signal will sound. It is noticed that taxiing to the lane occurs more clearly when the “cruise” is activated.
The new RAV4 also has a traffic sign recognition system. In the Owner’s Manual, their list covers almost a whole page, but in fact, I observed in fact only speed limit signs. The built-in navigation system warns of road cameras by displaying symbols reminiscent of birdhouses. However, apparently, she does not know all the cameras, even installed stationary on the arches above the road (on the M9 highway).
The crossover suspension has been upgraded in the direction of increasing comfort. Indeed, the car is not perceived as hard, even on asphalt potholes and knolls. It is not removed from the balance and roughness of the primers. In terms of overcoming them at speed, he approaches the Renault Arkana and leaves Nissan Qashqai behind.
But for a very off-road terrain, this car has something new in store! Now it has a Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system, almost like the company’s “older” SUVs. That is, of course, almost, but not the same.
So, at our disposal there were three off-road modes: normal, Mud & sand and Rock & dirt. Modes make changes to the operation of the engine, brakes and other systems. So, in the Mud & sand mode, the stabilization system is automatically turned off. Plus, with each wheel of the rear axle, there is now a separate clutch, which allows you to redistribute the torque between the wheels in difficult conditions and simulate the differential lock. This system is called Dynamic Torque Vectoring (DTV).
I try to overcome the familiar small gully, which front-wheel drive crossovers did not cope with. When descending into it diagonally, the RAV4 instantly hung out one of the rear wheels. Fiasco: despite the angle of entry of 18 degrees, the crossover rests its front end on the ground, and the wheels caught on the ground cannot move it. On the second attempt, I direct the car a little to the right, however, the selected Mud & sand mode does not pull it up and along a new path. And Rock & dirt mode pulls out without even turning off the “stabilizer”. This creates a distinct feeling that a lower gear is working under the bottom of the car.
I turn around 180 degrees and again storm the natural notch. In this case, the right rear wheel rises even more into the air, and with it the left front wheel, the car sways significantly in the diagonal direction. Trying not to cause damage to the body, at the same time I look at the dashboard. Now it displays the distribution of moment along the axes. Apparently, the interaxal device is close to blocking: on the front and rear axles of the traction equally. But RAV4, leaning forward, suddenly stops and starts blinking the reddened symbol of the right front wheel. Inspection shows that there is no stop in the ground. I repeat the attempt, adding “gas”. Hooray, the crossover once again blinked a red symbol, but still crawled forward and climbed up. What is this symbol? It turns out that the car reports a slipping of a particular wheel. When hanging the wheels, their slippage was not diagnosed, and the right front one spun idle when it touched the ground.
The diagram of the distribution of torque along the axes in the new RAV4, in principle, is the same as in the old, but the indication of slipping is an innovation. And, as it seemed to me, both axles are more often involved in the new crossover – in any case, according to the “opinion” of the on-board computer. It was possible to achieve an obvious moment advantage on the front wheels only with a sharp acceleration on the asphalt in ECO and Normal modes.
The new RAV4 is clearly richer than its predecessor. Both externally and internally, the “filling” is worthy of a car of a higher class. And off-road modes are superior to the standard crossover. But the price tag has changed significantly – it has increased by about 300-400 thousand rubles, and now the maximum configuration of the Prestige Safety for 2.66 million rubles is slightly cheaper than the base Land Cruiser Prado. But the equipment of the two cars will not be comparable, so only the “junior” CH-R crossover, which is even slightly more expensive in the “base”, can be considered a real rival to the RAV4. But in this situation it is difficult not to give the palm to the “senior”. Especially if you have plans for off-road driving, on which the new RAV4 is now much more appropriate than before.
The fifth-generation RAV4 crossover (XA50) is considered the model of 2018. Compared to its predecessor, it has become visually larger and more solid, but actually shorter (though only 5 mm), while maintaining the same height and 10 mm wider. The wheelbase has increased by 30 mm, which supposedly made it possible to make the interior more spacious, but my measurements in the new model almost coincide with the old one. The trunk also almost did not grow in volume.
