American Cadillac has introduced the fourth-generation Magnetic Ride Control adaptive suspension. The company speaks of it as the most serious technology update, and also calls it the fastest in the world – compared to its predecessor, the reaction rate has increased by 45 percent
MagneRide 4.0, as in previous generations, uses shock absorbers with dual solenoid coils built into the stem. They act on the magnetorheological fluid in the working chamber, which, in the presence of a magnetic field, is capable of almost instantaneously changing the viscosity level by clamping the suspension.
The optimal level of damping for each of the four struts is determined using the vertical acceleration sensors built into the hub: they work four times faster and “copy” the road up to a thousand times per second. An inertial measuring unit monitors the movements of the body relative to the wheel during sudden braking and when cornering.
In the fourth iteration of MagneRide, the control software has also been rewritten and hardware has been replaced, internal friction has been reduced (the manufacturer refers to the effect of “zero damping”), and the difference between different driving modes has been made more pronounced. Plus, secondary temperature maps have been added, which made it possible to compensate for changes in fluid temperature in the shock absorber for more stable operation, especially during dynamic driving.
