Starting this spring, BMW 3 Series diesel engines, as well as X3 and X4 crossovers will be equipped with a moderate hybrid system by default. It will include a 48-volt starter-generator, which will help the engine during acceleration
Moderate hybrids will be BMW 320d, 320d xDrive sedans and station wagons, X3 xDrive20d and X4 xDrive20d crossovers. The electric motor will allow for a small increase in power during sharp accelerations and will provide more frequent engine operation in an optimized load range.
It also has the functions of a start-stop system: the starter-generator will stop the engine when braking (if the speed drops below 15 kilometers per hour) or when coasting (up to 160 kilometers per hour). The fuel consumption of the hybrid BMW 320d will be 4–4 , 1 liter per 100 kilometers, 320d xDrive – 4.2–4.3 liters, and X3 xDrive20d and X4 xDrive20d – 4.8–5.1 liters.
